The Dunwoody Nature Center is rebuilding its front entrance in order to make it more accessible and better looking.
Council members listened to a presentation by Parks and Recreations Manager Brent Walker on Oct. 27, and will vote Nov. 10 to award the construction contract.
Alan Mothner, the executive director for the nature center, said the new design involves removing the existing steps and renovating the front plaza with a surface that will allow water to pass through, as opposed to the current impervious one.
The steps are “rickety and of different sizes,” Mothner said. “They’re not to code.”
In addition to replacing the steps with an accessible decked ramp, a “small aesthetic feature” of collecting rainwater from the roof will help the existing problem of water pooling in the entrance way, Mother said.
The Nature Center expects to begin construction in December, Mothner said, and the center will remain open during the two to three-month process, with access to the main education building from the side and back entries.
