Safety concerns have delayed the rollout of the Atlanta Streetcar until at least Dec. 6. According to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Federal Transit Administration informed the city earlier this month that safety issues must be resolved before the streetcars can transport passengers.
Mayor Kasim Reed said those issues have since been addressed, and he is asking state and federal officials to allow the transit service to begin Dec. 6 instead of mid-November as originally planned.
FTA Acting Administrator Therese McMillan said in a statement Wednesday that outstanding safety issues and regulatory requirements remain unresolved.
The streetcar, which will run a 2.7-mile loop from Centennial Olympic Park to the King Center, has been in testing phase since mid-August.
