A strong thunderstorm that bubbled up over the city this afternoon brought flooding rain, knocked down trees and cut electricity to neighborhoods.

The most significant flooding was on the Downtown Connector after clogged drains forced the closure of the busy interstate in both directions around 1:30 p.m. On North Avenue, at least on car became submerged in fast rising water near the intersection of Central Park Place.

Trees were blown down in Virginia-Highland and other neighborhoods and thousands were left in the dark, including a swath of Midtown. Numerous traffic signals were also out in Downtown at the height of the storm causing even more traffic snarls.
