Intown live music lovers have been dealt a second blow this week as Smith’s Olde Bar announced it has been given a 60-day notice to vacate its longtime premises on Piedmont Avenue near Ansley Mall. According to a report from Tomorrow’s News Today, the strip of retail businesses will be sold at auction in August after its owner recently died. The music venue, which has occupied the space since 1993, is fighting the notice. The potential loss of Smith’s comes on the heels of the announcement that the historic mill that houses The Masquerade on North Avenue will become part of mixed-use apartment development.
The High Museum of Art has appointed Randall Suffolk as its new director, according to a media release. Suffolk, who is currently director and president of the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, Ok., succeeds Michael E. Shapiro, who will step down on July 31 after 15 years as the High’s director. Suffolk will assume his role at the High on Nov. 2.
A touch of West Hollywood might be coming to Midtown as a project to have rainbow crosswalks installed at the intersection of Piedmont Avenue and 10th street, an area long associated with the LGBT community. Creative Loafing reports that a nonprofit group has been navigating Atlanta’s bureaucracy to have the painted crosswalks placed at the busy intersection. The Atlanta Urban Design Commission will determine the fate of the crosswalks at its Aug. 5 meeting. Find out more about the project at this link.
