State transportation officials are considering redrawing the lanes on Peachtree Road through Buckhead to add a central left turn lane and bicycle lanes along the portion of the road south of Peachtree Battle Avenue.
“Peachtree changes character at Peachtree Battle,” Andrew Heath, traffic engineer with the Georgia Department of Transportation, told members of the board of the Buckhead Community Improvement District on Aug. 25.
The DOT’s new plan will be presented for public comment in October, Heath said. An earlier plan was widely panned by residents, so DOT planners took a new look at ways to restripe the lanes on Peachtree between Dearing and Pharr roads. The restriping and lane changes would be part of a repaving project.
After examining a variety of options for efficiency and safety, DOT is recommending a plan that would create six lanes — three headed south, two headed north and a central turn lane — on the portion of Peachtree north of Peachtree Battle. South of Peachtree Battle, the road would have two southbound lanes, two northbound lanes, a central turn lane and bicycle lanes along each side of the road.
The design, Heath said, would allow church parking along Peachtree to continue on Sunday mornings.
