Sandy Springs police blotter: Oct. 24 through Nov. 6
The following incidents and arrests are some but not all, of the reports filed with Sandy Springs police.
The following information was provided by Capt. Steve Rose of the Sandy Springs Police Department from its records and the information is presumed to be accurate.
Robbery
Nothing to see here. Move along.
Burglary
5500 block of Glenridge Drive—On Oct. 24, someone entered a woman’s apartment and took several items while she was gone for a day. The resident suspects her ex-boyfriend.
5600 block of Roswell Road—On Oct. 26, Apple desktop and MacBook Air computers were taken from an apartment sometime between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.
Carroll Manor Drive—On Oct. 26, a resident noted that about 1 a.m. she heard noises and then later found that someone tried to force entry to her home. She told police that the previous tenant left in a hurry and left several items at the home. He later accused her of stealing his laptop and some belts. She said the former property manager actually has his stuff.
Mount Paran Road – On Oct. 26, Officers responding to an alarm just before noon found forced entry to a home’s kitchen window. Some cash and some silver flatware were reported missing.
Parkgate Drive—On Nov. 4, a resident said she returned home and noticed the door was not locked. She was sure she left it locked. She reported her Sony TV and Nintendo WII game system missing. She suspects a man who lived with her about nine months ago. She said he was a thief and had stolen from her before. She said he didn’t have a key, but he had access to hers (meaning he probably made a copy of one.)
Thefts
5800 block Glenridge Drive—On Oct. 24, a company representative said they fired a guy who was suspected of fraud. Afterward, they discovered he took several items including iPhone6, two Note 4 cellphones, three Kyocera cellphones, a hot spot and a printer.
5600 block of Roswell Road—On Oct. 24, employees of a discount department store reported that a woman came into the store and took more than $700 in merchandise. She was recognized by the staff, who had her arrested several days earlier for the same thing. Warrants are pending.
Roswell Road and Tahoma Drive—On Oct. 25, a cab driver said she was stiffed for a $20 fare by three men who jumped and ran from the car.
5000 block of Glenridge Drive—On Oct. 25, a man reported that he met a girl on a website and she came over to his home and they spent some time together that included some intimate moments. She abruptly got up and went to the door to leave. (She was intoxicated.) He offered an Uber ride, but she ran off. Later, she texted him saying she would pursue rape charges against him. He phoned the police. The responding officer tried several times to reach her by phone and text, but she did not respond. The man said he returned to his home and discovered his Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine watch, valued at $5,600 and $250 cash was missing. Since that night there was no sexual assault claim made.
2000 block of The Valley—On Oct. 26, a woman said that she had a pair of shoes she bought to give to her new boyfriend. She said that her old boyfriend took the shoes and $400 cash from her closet when she broke up with him. He apparently admitted taking them to her, but did not return them. I suggest that if the relationship is over and it is time to end it, make sure you get all your stuff out before you actually leave. I found this out when I discovered my golf clubs and bag on fire when I returned for them. It’s a good idea to hire a bouncer to keep the intended person in the room during the breakup speech.
5700 block of Roswell Road—An employee of a gas station reported a man stole several scratch-off tickets. The employee said he knows the man, who is a regular customer and thief. Bad guys who steal scratch off or other lotto tickets know the numbers are cancelled out, much like serial numbers, so what they do is sell them half price or more. So don’t buy a $5 scratch off ticket for two bucks.
Summer Crossing Drive—A man said his gun is missing from the night stand. He said that there have been delivery people in the residence and could have taken the gun. If someone is going to steal a gun, I think the VERY FIRST place to look is the night stand. Don’t leave it there when you’re gone. In fact, take the gun with you when you go. That’s what it’s for. Remember: zombies are everywhere.
4900 block of Roswell Road—On Oct. 29, a woman reported she placed her phone on the counter at her job and left it unattended. She said someone reached over the cubical and took it. She saw the shadow of someone running out the door toward the stairs, but could not make out the person well enough for a description.
900 block of Abernathy Road—On Nov. 1, a man reported his bike was stolen from the parking deck, along with the bike lock.
Berrydale Drive–A resident said her trash bin was stolen.
Assault
No address—A woman said she was assaulted by her boyfriend, who struck her after he wanted money and she told him he was ungrateful. She said he hit her with a carton of Newports. He was charged with simple battery.
No address—A woman said her boyfriend and soon-to-be baby’s father struck her in the face after she tried to remove a beer from his hand during the Georgia-Florida football game. She said she had scratches on her face from the incident. She did have scratches, but they were not recent. The boyfriend left the location. No charges were filed.
700 block of Morgan Falls Road—On Nov. 3, a man reported that he was in a verbal argument with an employee. The man said the other guy “got in his face” and took an aggressive stance while he was in his work space. The other guy then punched him in the mouth, then grabbed his personal items and left.
8700 block of Dunwoody Place—On Nov. 3, around 11:30 p.m., officers were called to North Fulton Hospital to see a victim who said he was assaulted and stabbed several times in the forearm while at a gas station on Dunwoody Place. He told officers that he walked to the station to buy cigarettes. In line in front of him was a couple. They took a long time to check out, so he said something to them about taking so long. He had words with the man, then bought his cigarettes and walked outside. The same man came up to him and stabbed him in the arm. The victim ran off.
Other Things
Northside Drive—On Oct. 24, officers were called to a restaurant shortly before midnight regarding an attempted car theft. What they found was that the man was very drunk and, instead of getting into his Jeep, he got into someone else’s Jeep by mistake. (Thankfully he did not make it into his Jeep.) He was with a sober friend, who took him home after police cited him for disorderly conduct under the influence.
No address—A man said his ex-girlfriend said she was coming over to break his stuff. He broke up with her recently and on the previous Saturday he told her that he didn’t want to talk to her anymore. In response, she said she would come over and break his windows and damage his belongings. He said he didn’t have hardly any belongings so she would be damaging his roommate’s belongings. Asked what car she would arrive in, he said she doesn’t drive so friends would have to give her a ride.
No address—A 17-year-old man said he has received several phone calls he deemed threatening, one of which was a warning that if he didn’t leave Atlanta the caller would send someone to pick him up and force him to eat his own buttocks.
Peachtree-Dunwooy Road—A man arrested for urinating at the MARTA station just after 6 p.m. His credentials said he was a taxi driver.
700 block of Hammond Drive—On Oct. 31, around 11 p.m. officers responded to a call that several unruly juveniles were in front of a condo property. The officers located one juvenile, who appeared extremely intoxicated and who told the officer “I’m drunker than an [expletive deleted].” His mother was called, but prior to her arrival, the kid passed out and had to be taken to Northside Hospital by ambulance for evaluation. He did regain consciousness prior to being transported. He was charged for underage possession.
Ga. 400 at Northridge—An officer arrived to investigate an accident and found that one of the drivers appeared to be having a seizure inside his car, which was locked. The driver was unable to respond to requests so the officer broke the window as the paramedics arrived. It did not appear that he received any injuries from the accident.
Fraud
No address—A woman reported that she and a guy named “Don” agreed that he would invest $500 with her on some sort of real estate deal. He deposited a check in her account and then, somehow, was able to withdraw $100 from that account, saying that it was his insurance that she would pay it back. She demanded he return the $100 to her account. He then fled in a white car driven by another person. The check, of course, was bad. She called the owner of the check, who said it and others were stolen in August. The bank investigators are looking into it as well.
No address—A man reported that he received mail from Barclays MasterCard company regarding past due payments on his card. He never opened an account with the company. Charges were being made in the metro area on that card.
No address—A man reported that he was contacted by Comcast on a $789 past due account that he did not open.
Glenridge Drive—A business owner said he noticed suspicious activity on his business account, confirmed by his bank. Several transactions totaling $1,500 were conducted on the account, which resulted in refunds to another account not associated with the business. He held a meeting with the employees telling them that if the person came forward, he would fire them, but not prosecute them. No one came forward, however, one of the employees did not return to work. He later confirmed that the account where the refunds were directed was that of the missing employee.
Arrests
Hammond Drive—On Oct. 24, around 2:30 a.m., in an area recently known for thefts, a man was in his car smoking marijuana. The man was wanted in Cobb County for a felony, which he failed to mention to police. He also had a knife with methamphetamine residue.
6300 block of Roswell Road—On Oct. 24, officers responded to a fight call between a girlfriend and a boyfriend. During the intervention, the officers determined that the man was wanted for a burglary that occurred on Sept. 29. He was arrested.
Riverside Road at River Valley (accident)—A driver hit a pole and snapped it off. He said he had (the traditional) two beers. He was later charged with DUI.
6100 block of Powers Ferry Road—Cops arrested a woman for DUI after two sisters got into a fight over the one driving too slow on I-285.
5600 block of Roswell Road—On Oct. 24, employees of a discount department store called police after recognizing a suspect, who was possibly wanted on previous shoplifting charges. Officers first detained a woman and later they detained a man. Both were suspected of being involved in multiple shopliftings in the metro area. The woman had multiple names, including those with warrants pending in Cobb and Gwinnett counties, as well as Sandy Springs. She and the man, who was wanted in DeKalb County, were wanted for larceny offenses and were arrested.
7700 block of Spalding Drive—On Oct. 25, officers responded to a bar regarding a suspicious person who had previously been banned from the bar. The officer noted a woman driver, who was in the car the suspect, promptly got up and walked into the bar. Turns out that wasn’t a good move since she had been banned as well. Anyway, the officer then saw the guy sitting in the passenger’s seat toss out some white powder that turned out to be cocaine. He was arrested. After his arrest, he said he had high blood pressure and was a diabetic. EMS was called to check him out and he told them he was neither. Shortly after, his pants caught on fire. He was arrested.
5600 block of Peachtree-Dunwoody Road—On Nov. 3, officers were called to Saint Joseph’s Hospital to assist security officers who got into a scuffle with a patient because the patient had a joint on him. The scuffle ensued when he tried to dispose of it in the bathroom. He later told the cops it was in his book bag and he had forgotten about it. He was given a ticket by the police and was discharged from the hospital.
Peachtree-Dunwoody Road at Hammond—Around 4:30 a.m. a patrol officer was checking the area of several hotels due to recent car break-ins. The officer saw a Dodge Charger with four people inside. He asked what they were up to and checked them on GCIC. One came back with a wanted alert and warrants from Cobb County on a probation violations and financial transaction card fraud. He was arrested.
8700 block of Roswell Road—On Nov. 4, employees of a grocery store watched a woman steal two bottles of Listerine by placing them in her purse. She then bought some Tide Pods and walked out, where she was detained for police. She was charged with shoplifting the $21 items. She was released on a copy of charges pending her court appearance.
Peachtree-Dunwoody Road and Crestline Parkway—On Nov. 5, a patrol officer stopped a vehicle around 11 p.m. after he observed the rear taillights and brake lights were not working. The driver turned out to be wanted in DeKalb County for a probation warrant stemming from an original charge of dealing cocaine. He also was wanted in Henry County for a probation violation stemming from drugs and in Cobb County for a hit and run offense. His license was also suspended. He was arrested.
