A roundabout planned as a replacement for the intersection of Wieuca Road and Phipps Boulevard is heading into the design stage. The Buckhead Community Improvement District board on March 2 approved the selection of Pond & Company to do the work. The roundabout emerged in a CID study last fall as the best alternative design to improve traffic at the busy Wieuca/Phipps intersection. Estimated to cost more than $2 million to build, the five-legged roundabout would relieve traffic jams 23 hours a day—leaving the evening rush-hour peak still clogged, a consultant previously told the CID board. A groundbreaking ceremony was held Feb. 3 for a new shopping center on Moores Mill Road, which will include a Publix grocery store and 9,000 square feet of retail space in its initial phase. The $95 million development is projected to create up to 200 construction-related jobs and as many as 300 permanent jobs. EDENS expects to open the initial phase of the development in June 2017. In addition, EDENS will donate $100,000 to fund improvements to Sara J. Gonzalez Park, located adjacent to the Moores Mill shopping center. The will work in partnership with EDENS to complete the Moores Mill Road extension, which will alleviate traffic issues at the intersection of Moores Mill and Bolton roads.
The future of Downtown’s Central Library building at Margaret Mitchell Square is uncertain, according to a report in Creative Loafing. The Atlanta-Fulton County Library System wants to tweak plans outlined to voters in a 2008 bond referendum that included the building of new Central Library in Downtown. The library system wants to focus on fixing up libraries that need maintenance and put more resources toward those with high usage by patrons.
