Protestors marched through Downtown, Midtown, Piedmont Park and blocked the Downtown Connector on Thursday night in a call for justice in the wake of two recent killings of black men by police officers. More protests are expected today, July 8, at events announced on social media.
CBS46 reports that a group will meet at the Center for Civil and Human Rights in Downtown from 4 to 8 p.m. The Atlanta NAACP has organized a march for justice at Centennial Olympic Park at 6 p.m.
The protests come after Alton Sterling was shot to death by officers in Louisiana and Philando Castile in Minnesota. Some Atlanta protestors said they were also suspicious of police reports that a man found hanging from a tree in Piedmont Park on the morning of July 7 was a suicide.
In Dallas, Texas last night, five police officers were killed and a dozen more wounded in a sniper attack following a protest march through the city’s business district.
