Building over – or capping – the interstates that run through Atlanta has suddenly became a thing, and the latest proposal is to create a half-mile long “Park Over Georgia 400” (as it’s being called now) in Buckhead. Renderings for the proposed park were revealed by Buckhead CID during its meeting on Wednesday morning and then in a public forum at Buckhead Theatre.
The park would be divided into three zones – The Commons, The Plaza and The Gardens – and provide both active and passive space with plenty of greenery, flowers and tress. There would also be biking and walking paths and direct access to MARTA. The projected cost: $195 million-plus.
Buckhead CID may decide to move forward with the ambitious project at its Oct. 5 meeting.
This is the second interstate cap idea floated in the last month, with a proposal called The Stitch introduced to cap over the Downtown Connector in the heart of the city to create space for new homes, office space, retail and parks. There have also been proposals to build a park to connect Technology Square and the Georgia Tech campus over the Connector in Midtown and to reconnect the Grant Park neighborhood split by I-20.
