The Atlanta Police Department has promised to step up patrols in and around the Alexan EAV apartment complex in East Atlanta Village where a resident, Alex Newton, was shot and killed after he interrupted a burglar on Monday afternoon. Police also released images of a suspect caught on video camera leaving the complex.
Residents at the complex are frightened and demanding that the building’s management increase security immediately. East Atlanta residents expressed their concerns to city and police officials during an emergency public safety meeting on Nov. 1 called by City Councilmember Natalyn Archibong.
The management company sent a statement to our broadcast partner CBS46 stating, “The property’s operational leadership team, along with representatives of the property’s ownership group and local police, are meeting to discuss additional protocols at the property.”
In a media statement, Atlanta Police said East Atlanta has experienced an 8.5 percent reduction in crime from this same period in 2015. Also compared to 2015, Zone 6 in its entirety has experienced a 10 percent reduction in part 1 crime overall. This is the sixth homicide for Zone 6 in 2016. Zone 6 has experienced a consistent trend of crime reductions and currently has the lowest number of reported crimes in the City of Atlanta, according to police records.
The statement also said Zone 6 officers have met with management and residents to make security recommendations. Five reported burglaries took place at the Alexan EAV in September and October.
