Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry announced during an afternoon briefing on May 1 that repairs to I-85 are expected to be complete by May 26 – just in time for the busy Memorial Day weekend.
Contractor CW Matthews is making quick work of the repairs to I-85, which is expected to cost $16.6 million. Crews have been working around-the-clock, with $3 million in incentive money offered by the state if the job is complete before the end of the month.
A portion of I-85 north just before the Georgia 400 exit collapsed during a fire fueled by construction materials stored under the overpass. The fire was allegedly set by a homeless man, who has been charged with arson in the incident but has been set free on bond.
