Atlanta police are investigating after four Inman Middle School students were robbed at gunpoint off-campus on Virginia Avenue as they were walking toward to school. According to Fox 5, the incident happened on Jan. 24 around 5 p.m. in the 600 block of Virginia Avenue. When police arrived, the students told police they were walking from Starbucks to the school when it happened. The suspect brandished a handgun and told them to put their cellphones on the ground and run. Police confirmed the students were not harmed but their cellphones were taken.
The historic home called The Castle that sits at the corner of Peachtree and 15th streets next door to the Woodruff Arts Center in Midtown is for sale again. According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the owners, MLAC Castle Atlanta LLC, have filed for Chapter 11 federal bankruptcy. Eater Atlanta is reporting that the Rose & Rye restaurant in The Castle has now closed in the wake of the bankruptcy filing and announcement of the sale. Built by Ferdinand McMillan the early 1900’s, The Castle has been threatened with demolition countless times and was famously called a “hunk of junk” by former Mayor Andrew Young. It previous incarnations, The Castle has served as artist studios, office space and a private club.
The chair of Buckhead’s HUB404 park board, Jay Gould, has been fired by his company, Midtown-based flooring company Interface, for “personal behavior” just as the greenspace’s fundraising effort gears up, according to Reporter Newspapers. Gould, the president and CEO of Interface “was terminated after an investigation concluded that he engaged in personal behavior that violated company policy and core values.” He was named to the HUB404 board last year in a move seen as significantly raising the profile of the effort to build a park over Ga. 400 in central Buckhead. “We’re trying to figure out how we’re going to be dealing with that,” said HUB404 board treasurer Jim Durrett, who is also executive director of the Buckhead Community Improvement District, at a Jan. 22 meeting of the latter group’s board. “…I’m disappointed in what has recently happened with Jay Gould.”
