“One By One” group exhibition at ABV Gallery. Photographs by Isadora Pennington.

Last weekend, ABV Gallery in Old Fourth Ward presented the 2024 edition of their annual showcase of works that are limited to a 1′ by 1′ canvas. This group exhibition features works by 60+ artists from 8 countries who are challenged to create unique pieces within strict limitations on size.

I was impressed by the vast array of styles, aesthetics, and approaches to this prompt. I have found that at times artists are more inspired when asked to operate within boundaries such as a specific canvas size, and this show is no exception to that rule. There were bright and colorful pieces paired alongside monochromatic works. Some depicted figures and animals, while others relied on typography to convey their message.

ABV Gallery’s “One By One” group exhibition will remain on display only through Feb. 17, so don’t miss your chance to see it for yourself during ABV’s open hours.
