Sandy Springs approved a $249,992 contract to create an improvement plan for the North Springs MARTA Station, Peachtree Dunwoody Road corridor, and the alignment of the Path 400 Trail.

Nelson/Nygaard Consulting Associates Inc. was awarded the contract by the Sandy Springs City Council during its Feb. 6 meeting.

The city will use federal funds from a $200,000 grant awarded by the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) through the Livable Centers Initiative to pay the consultants. The city must add $50,000 as a required match for the grant.

In October 2023 the city added a North Springs MARTA Station transit-oriented development to its plans for a Peachtree Dunwoody Road Corridor at the request of the ARC. The plan will incorporate bus rapid transit with the MARTA station.

The project area is along Peachtree Dunwoody from Abernathy Road to Spalding Drive, which Public Works Directory Marty Martin said in October is approximately 1.75 miles long. The designated area has a variety of land uses including multifamily residential, single-family residential, and commercial.

Traffic and Transportation Unit Manager Kristen Wescott told the city council the study would be wrapped up by fall. She said this study will build on the Perimeter Livable Cities Initiative study completed several years ago.

This new project will study the Peachtree Dunwoody corridor looking at major investments from the city standpoint on the roadway network, she said. It also will examine regional transit with the North Springs MARTA Station as well as walking, biking, and last mile connectivity.

“Ultimately this helps us with the plan to continue PATH 400 up through Perimeter and beyond,” Martin said.
