AT&T says it has restored services to tens of thousand of customers after a nationwide outage that lasted most of the day.

AT&T said in a statement:

“We have restored wireless service to all our affected customers. We sincerely apologize to them. Keeping our customers connected remains our top priority, and we are taking steps to ensure our customers do not experience this again in the future,” the company statement said.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) posted on X that it would investigate the outage.

“We are aware of the reported wireless outages, and our Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau is actively investigating. We are in touch with AT&T and public safety authorities, including FirstNet, as well as other providers.”

While Atlanta’s E-911 services are not impacted by the outage, the non-emergency lines were down earlier today, according to the Atlanta Police Department. Service had returned to normal by mid afternoon.

On Feb. 20, Atlanta’s E-911 services were disrupted for a short time in the afternoon due to AT&T technical difficulties impacting cities in the southeast, according to APD.

Mayor Andre Dickens released a statement on social media this morning stating that the city was “actively gathering information” about the outage.

“We are aware that AT&T is having cellular outages this week and are actively gathering information to determine how the City of Atlanta can assist in resolving this issue. Atlanta’s e-911 is able to receive inbound and make outbound calls. We have received calls from AT&T customers that their cellular phones are in SOS mode. Please direct all inquiries to restore service to AT&T.”

In Sandy Springs, 911 service was unavailable for some AT&T users and residents were advised to set the wireless dialing feature on their phone or use a landline to dial 911. Service was restored this afternoon, officials said.

More than 73,000 AT&T customers reported outages on digital-service tracking site DownDetector this morning according to a report from CNN, although those are self-reported outages. There were also reports of smaller outages on both Verizon and T-Mobile, according to DownDetector.
