Atlanta City Councilmember Keisha Sean Waites resigned her post at the beginning of Monday’s meeting.

Waites plans to run for Fulton County Superior Court Clerk and could not hold both offices. She was elected to the Post 3 At-Large council seat in 2021.

Waites released this statement after her resignation:

“With profound gratitude in my heart, I express my deepest appreciation for the privilege of serving as a member of this esteemed body. Today, I announce my departure from this role, driven by the constraints of existing Georgia state law which necessitate my vacating the Post 3 At-Large seat to pursue higher office.

After prayer and reflection with my family, I’ve decided to expand our collective efforts and embark on a new journey. Though not an easy decision, I am filled with excitement and optimism for the future. Serving alongside each of you has been an honor and a highlight of my career.

Together, we’ve achieved remarkable milestones, and I’m immensely proud of our accomplishments. As I embark on this new chapter, I am filled with hope and optimism for the future. To my family and extended family, your love and support have been my greatest blessings, and I am profoundly grateful for each of you.

In closing, I look forward to the continued journey ahead, and I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for our beloved city. Together, let us continue to work tirelessly to build a brighter and more prosperous future for all.”

Before being elected to the Atlanta City Council, Waites served three terms in the Georgia House of Representatives representing District 60. She resigned from the position to run for Fulton County Board of Commissioners in 2017 but lost to Robb Pitts.
