Peachtree Creek Greenway volunteers gather on a regular basis to clean up the creek and surrounding woods.

Providing volunteers with gloves and trash bags, the non-profit group needs labor to make the urban greenspace safe, clean and enjoyable for pedestrians. The first clean up of the Spring season is scheduled for March 23.

Due to recent heavy rains, the creek and surrounding areas have accumulated an unwelcome amount of trash and debris. The Spring cleanup is a critical step in protecting the creek’s ecosystem, wildlife, and natural beauty, according to flyer released about the event.

This event is “a call to arms for individuals, community groups, local schools, and anyone passionate about making a difference. By joining hands, we can ensure a significant and positive impact on our environment,” the flyer states.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Lakeside High School boys basketball team volunteered for a creek clean up. Students were joined by Brookhaven Mayor John Park and Councilmember Michael Diaz to remove tires, computer accessories, food containers, and other garbage. Dozens of people helped that day.

“I’m out here on a beautiful day, cleaning up along the creek. This is a community asset, so as a community we keep it together for today and the future,” Park said.
