The Sandy Springs Recreation and Parks Department will use a $12,500 grant to expand its Explorer Summer Camp Series.

The Sandy Springs City Council voted to accept the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association’s Building Opportunities in Out-of-School Time (BOOST) grant during its March 19 meeting.

The grant is intended to enable agencies to expand access and to improve the quality of summer enrichment opportunities for K-12 youth, Recreation and Parks Program Coordinator Jane Jarrett.

“With this grant, we’re encouraging more education to occur during the out-of-school time,” she said.

Jarrett said the funds will enable an increase in the Explorer Summer Camp Series from 30 to 60 campers. The five-week camp is held from June to July at Ison Springs Elementary School.

Children ages 8 through 12 can attend camp Monday through Friday. The camp has onsite and offsite activities, including kayaking, visiting the Chattahoochee Nature Center, Bricks4Kids, Young Chef Academy, Georgia Aquarium, Little Medical School, and the Football Hall of Fame.

Last year the camp received a $2,650 grant, she said.

Registration information can be found on the city’s website.
