The Mt. Vernon Highway bridge opening has already made a positive impact on commute times, according to the Sandy Springs Police Department.

“Traffic is lighter on Heards Ferry Road and Riverside Drive. This has drastically improved commuting time within the city,” Sgt. Leon Millholland, the department’s spokesperson, said.

Construction on Mt. Vernon Highway and Johnson Ferry Road just east of City Springs has had minimal impact on travelers, he said.

Georgia Department of Transportation spokesperson Natalie Dale said the department was thrilled to be one step further in the process for the bridge portion of the project.

The work that remains includes finishing the pedestrian walkways, striping, lighting, a barrier wall, and fencing.

Motorists can expect flagging operations mostly during the daytime. However, some nightly closures might occur during grooving of the deck for a night or two, Dale said.

Completion of the Mt. Vernon bridge is anticipated in mid to late summer, July or August. She said that after its completion, the old bridge demolition will begin.
