The city of Brookhaven is starting a 43-mile street paving program on Monday, May 20. The date was previously May 13, but weather has caused a delay.

The city signed a three-year, three-phase agreement with contractor C.W. Matthews focusing on improving 76 streets, according to a press release. The cost of these improvements is approximately $20 million and utilizes Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST II) funding.

According to the release, previous paving projects focused on streets requiring full-depth reclamation, which were expensive and took longer to complete. The upcoming project prioritizes full-width roadway milling to repair more streets at a faster rate.

“Brookhaven’s top priority is to enhance and improve its infrastructure,” said Mayor John Park in the release. “We want to protect and maintain the integrity of our streets for current and future residents.”

Phase I of the project will cover 29 streets starting with Wood Valley Court, Fernway Court, Brenton Circle, Frontenac Court, Club Walk Drive, Hermance Drive and Lanier Drive.

Start and end dates are tentative based on weather conditions, and are subject to change. Brookhaven’s social media is expected to have more information about road closures and detours.
