Ninth-grade North Springs High School student Luna Castro-Hernandez won a Georgia Tech Summer Architecture Program scholarship.
“Luna’s accomplishment is exceptional, as it is rare for a ninth-grade student to secure such a prestigious scholarship,” North Springs CTAE-Engineering teacher Sharmila Durai said in a press release. “This accomplishment underscores the excellence and dedication within our CTAE-Engineering curriculum. Luna’s success is a testament to the impact of our program and its ability to provide exceptional opportunities for our students.”
She will live on campus with current architecture students who will assist in leading design exercises in the summer program at Georgia Tech on July 7-19.
Students will get hands-on experience in drawing, making and testing design ideas for an architectural project, the release said. Campers will gain an understanding of the path to an architecture career. They also will leave with a design project ready for their portfolio. The Pre-College Architecture studio exposes students to a wide array of creative possibilities as inspiration for the next generation of future designers.
The scholarship came from collaborative efforts between the CTAE (Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education)-Engineering program and The Bill Harrison Foundation, according to the release.
Students in the summer program will use cutting-edge technology and software on a design studio project. They will meet and learn from School of Architecture professors, the release said. A tour of the city will be made during which they will make sketches along the Beltline, in Midtown, at MODA, High Museum, and Piedmont Park. They’ll get to visit architecture firms where they will meet Georgia Tech graduates at work. Time for fun will be set aside with a movie night, bowling, and swimming on campus.
