The Atlanta Board of Education has announced its intention to increase the 2024 property taxes it will levy this year by 4.22 percent over the rollback millage rate of 18.784.

The budget tentatively adopted by the Atlanta Board of Education – a record $1.8 billion – requires a millage rate higher than the rollback millage rate. Georgia law requires the board to hold three public hearings on the issue.

Public hearings on this tax increase are to be held at the Alonzo A. Crim Center for Learning and Leadership Building, located at 130 Trinity Avenue, SW, on Aug. 5, at 6 p.m. and on Aug. 12 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The millage rate is the amount of taxes paid per $1,000 of a property’s value. Last year also saw an increase due to rising property values, with a $325,000 house with a homestead exemption seeing a tax increase of $137.
