The Georgia Election Board voted Wednesday to reinvestigate Fulton County’s handling of the 2020 presidential vote count, according to a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The board, led by three Republicans loyal to Donald Trump, voted 3-2 to ask for an investigation by Attorney General Chris Carr and report his progress in 30 days. If Carr declines to open an investigation, the board’s motion calls for the hiring of outside attorneys and investigators.
Four years later, Trump supporters continue to claim that President Joe Biden stole the election and that ballots were counted twice, among other unfounded conspiracy theories. Fulton ballots were recounted three times and no widespread fraud was ever found.
Fulton Election Board Chairwoman Sherri Allen told the AJC that the 2020 election has already been investigated and resolved.
“We will not engage in any further discussions, investigations or other action related to this case. To do so would be a waste of taxpayer dollars and time that is best spent preparing for the upcoming general election,” Allen said.
Board Chairman John Fervier opposed the investigation saying it exposes the board to lawsuits over a case that he believes was already decided and closed.
Board member Janelle King, who voted for the reinvestigation, said she wasn’t afraid of litigation.
“The amount of times I’ve been told not to do something because we could be sued, if this were a drinking game, we’d all be drunk,” King said during the meeting. “We need to not be scared to do things because it’s the right thing to do.”
