The Perimeter Center area may be getting a new Starbucks location, but several hurdles remain to allow for its construction.

On Aug. 13 the Dunwoody Planning Commission will consider an application for a Special Land Use Permit (SLUP) that will allow the construction of a 3,000-square-foot Starbucks’ drive-through on an outparcel at 140 Perimeter Center West.

The shopping center has several large tenants, including Total Wine & More, FedEx, PetSmart, Academy Sports + Outdoors, Havertys Furniture, T.J. Maxx, and the AT&T Store.

According to documents filed by TKG Perimeter Square LLC, the coffee shop would be built along the eastern edge of the parking lot, directly north of the existing curb cut on Perimeter Center West.

Last October, the Dunwoody City Council passed an amendment to regulations regarding facilities containing drive-through service, requiring applicants to apply for a SLUP.

According to the application for consideration, the construction would  “result in a net removal of 77 existing parking spaces compared to current conditions.” It would contain a single-drive through lane.

A supplement to the application prepared by civil engineering firm Gaskins + LaCraw said a community meeting was held on May 30 at Embassy Suites at 1030 Crown Pointe Parkway to explain the project to neighbors and businesses, but nobody attended the session.

The application said that the plan would include the installation of two pedestrian walkways that “will improve pedestrian accessibility for the entire site.”

A staff memo recommended the approval of the application, citing a lack of  “adverse impacts upon any adjoining land use; the proposed drive-through has adequate stacking distance to prevent issues in traffic flow in the area.”

“In addition to meeting the city’s stacking requirements, the restaurant is situated behind a long driveway providing additional queuing area for busy periods,” the memo said.

Another Starbucks with a drive-through is located at 4441 Ashford Dunwoody Rd., about a mile from the proposed site.

If passed, the Dunwoody City Council would have to approve the SLUP at a future meeting.
