The Global Village Project (GVP) will celebrate its 15th anniversary on Sept. 28 with a concert featuring more than 50 songs written by, with, and for GVP students.

The concert will take place at Oakhurst Center for Community in Decatur and will feature current students, alums from the 15 years of GVP.

The Global Village Project in Decatur brings together refugee students and uses singing and songwriting to teach English to GVP’s middle school attendees with interrupted education.

“Sometimes a concept that is hard for students to grasp becomes easy when we write a song about it,” says Elise Witt, Director of Music Programs at GVP since its inception.

Containing 55 songs, the new songbook, Imagine A Circle: The Global Village Project Songbook  is also a guidebook for using singing and songwriting to teach English Language Learners (ELL) around the globe. Designed by artist Jessica Lily, the book includes song lyrics, music notation, stories about the songs, teaching tips, and striking student artwork.

The concert celebrating Global Village Project’s 15th anniversary takes place Saturday, Sept. 28 at 5 p.m., tickets are available with RSVP here: https://globalvillageproject.org/news/concert/.
