Operating five weekly outdoor farmers markets and seven farm stands at MARTA stations is one of the strategies by which the organization addresses food access in Atlanta. CFM also offers educational programming in the community, financial incentives to make local food more affordable, and professional development for small businesses. See you at the farmers markets!

Coffee Chocolate Pot Roast Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 lb kabob/sirloin tip beef
  • 1 bunch (2 cups) carrots
  • 1.5 TB fine coffee grounds
  • 2 whole star anise
  • 2 small or 1 large bay leaves
  • 1 cup brewed coffee
  • 1 tsp ground: cloves, garlic, onion, brown or yellow mustard
  • 3 TB dark brown sugar (use less if chocolate has sugar)
  • 2 TB bitter chocolate or very dark chocolate (preferably 70% or up)

Directions:

  1. Brew 1 cup coffee and set aside.
  2. Thoroughly wash carrots, then chop large chunks and set aside.
  3. Grind 1.5 TB coffee beans until fine but still grainy-stop right before it becomes powder.
  4. Pat beef dry with towel and toss to season in ground coffee, cloves, garlic, onion, and brown mustard.
  5. In a wide pan or pot, heat to medium, add neutral oil, and at sizzling point, place kabob meat in pan and without moving them around, allow to brown on one side, then flip to brown on the other side. Take out meat and set aside.
  6. Turn heat off and using the residual heat, start deglazing all the flavor from the brown bits left over in pan with 1 cup brewed coffee, then add star anise, bay leaves, brown sugar and chocolate just to melt (careful not to burn chocolate!).
  7. Transfer meat and carrots to pot and pour pan liquid into same pot. You can cook this many different ways – on the stove on low heat for at least 1.5-2 hours or until meat is tender/in a crock pot on low for at least 6 hours/ Either way, the kabob meat should easily fall apart with a fork. You can add a little bit of cornstarch and cold water mixture to thicken the sauce, but this is totally up to you!
