Downed trees took power lines down with them, causing power outages across the region, including along this street in Dunwoody. (Provided by Dunwoody)

Thousands of Georgia Power customers including many in Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Brookhaven and Buckhead remained without power at 1 p.m. on Sunday after storms swept through the region.

Sandy Springs City Councilmember Andy Bauman reported on Facebook that the wind and rain early Sunday morning resulted in downed trees and power outages, with the biggest share in the southern portion of the city. He said the U.S. Geological Survey reported approximately 1 inch of rain fell.

Bauman said approximately 4,500 customers in Sandy Springs were without power, based on Georgia Power’s online outage map.

The Sandy Springs Public Works Department was actively clearing downed trees but had to wait for Georgia Power to deenergize and remove downed power lines. As of 11 a.m., trees were reported down at:

  • Lake Forrest at Mount Paran
  • Londonberry at Long Island Drive
  • Hammond Drive at Greenbriar Road
  • Mount Paran Road at Powers Ferry
  • 5800 Brookgreen Road
  • 4664 Lake Forrest Drive
  • 390 Stone Mill Trail
  • 3550 Spalding Drive
  • 5895 Kayron Drive

Signal outages were reported at Hammond Drive and Concourse Parkway, and at I-285 and Roswell Road, Bauman reported. Signal outages should be treated as four-way stops unless a police officer is directing traffic.

More than 10,000 Georgia Power customers in metro Atlanta lost electricity during the storm. Half of those had been restored by Sunday afternoon, according to the utility company.
