On Monday, in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the folks at Paint Love and organizers of Black Voters Matter (BVM) are bringing a hands-on workshop, film screening, and festivities to the “Empowered Voices” celebration at the Museum of Design Atlanta.
BVM’s stated goals are to “increase power in marginalized, predominantly Black communities” according to their website. They accomplish this feat by increasing voter registration not just in major metros, but also in smaller cities and towns that often are overlooked by political parties and elected officials.
BVM also advocates for policies that expand voter access, develops infrastructure to support emerging candidates and train staff, as well as occasionally funding activities related to specific elections.
“The leadership, talent and commitment demonstrated by Black women in particular must receive recognition and, more importantly, investment in order to flourish and multiply,” reads the Core Values section of BVM’s About page on their website.
“In order for Black voters to matter, we must utilize authentic messaging which speaks to our issues, connects with our hopes and affirms our humanity,” the text continues.
On Monday, Paint Love’s “Values Out Loud” art-making festivities planned by Paint Love also correlates with the last chance to view “CHARACTERS: Type in Action.”
This exhibit is dedicated to typefaces inspired by social justice and equity movements. Offering free admission, food available for purchase from a local food truck, and even free merch, this day of art and community is suitable for kids and adults alike.

“At the heart of Paint Love’s work with our school and nonprofit partners is showing children that their voice matters, their ideas are important, and their actions can make a difference in shaping the future,” said Laura Shaw, Paint Love’s Executive Director.
“Collaborating with Black Voters Matter with an art-making experience connected to MODA’s exhibit ‘CHARACTERS: Type In Action’ was an incredible opportunity for Paint Love to be part of a day celebrating design, democracy, and the power of collective voices to drive change,” Shaw continued.
In addition to viewing the exhibit, participants are also invited to watch a short documentary film and engage in conversation with the community about the important work that Black Voters Matter does. “Empowered Voices: MLK Day at MODA” will kick off at MODA on Mon., Jan. 20 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
