DeKalb County is holding two free recycling events for its residents.

The first is hazardous waste recycling, on Sat., March 15 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Sanitation Division’s Central Transfer Station, 3720 Leroy Scott Drive in Decatur.

According to a release from the county, no advance registration is required, but those wishing to participate must supply proof of DeKalb County residency. Acceptable items include:

  • Mercury 
  • Aerosols
  • Batteries
  • Adhesives (glue, etc.)
  • Flammable substances 
  • Photo chemicals 
  • Lawn care products
  • Fluorescent light bulbs 
  • Hobby and artist supplies 
  • Paint & paint-related products (limit of 10 gallon cans) 
  • Household cleaning supplies 
  • Swimming pool chemicals (strippers, solvents, etc.)
  • Propane gas cylinders (1-20 lbs.; limited to three per vehicle) 

Items that will not be accepted include:

  • Ammunition 
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Radioactive materials
  • Business-generated waste
  • Explosives
  • Biohazardous/biomedical waste
  • Gasoline
  • Diesel 
  • Kerosene
  • Automotive waste (fuel, oil, etc.) 

No commercial vehicles are allowed. Early arrival is highly recommended. 

On Sat. May 17, from 8 a.m to noon, at the same address, there will be free paper recycling/shredding, again for DeKalb County residents only. Businesses are restricted from participating in the event. 

Ten standard-size boxes per car are allowed. Shredding services are being provided by A1 Shredding & Recycling
