Downtown Atlanta, in partnership with The Daffodil Project, an international organization dedicated to building a living Holocaust memorial worldwide, announces planting the one-millionth daffodil bulb.

This global milestone honors the memory of 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust while supporting children facing humanitarian crises today. Since 2010, The Daffodil Project has worked to create a living Holocaust memorial through daffodil plantings in partnership with more than 650 sites around the world.

In Atlanta, the initiative forms a “ribbon of consciousness” that begins at the Center for Civil and Human Rights, weaves through Downtown, and connects to the King Center. This ribbon symbolizes unity, resilience, and shared humanity, linking the city’s historic landmarks, educational institutions, and public spaces. Visitors and residents can also enjoy daffodil plantings at locations like Woodruff Park.

“This project connects Atlanta’s landmarks in a powerful way, offering a visual and symbolic reminder of the lessons of the past and the values we uphold today,” said AJ Robinson, President of Central Atlanta Progress (CAP). “The daffodils not only enhance the beauty of our city but also honor those we’ve lost, challenge us to reflect on our history, and inspire a future of resilience and unity. With its long history of social justice and diverse population, Atlanta is uniquely suited to serve as a home for this project. These daffodils, spanning Downtown’s iconic landmarks, pay tribute to those who fought for justice and call on all of us to continue that vital work.”

With its first Downtown planting in 2013, Atlanta has become the largest participant in The Daffodil Project. The city’s 350,000 daffodils comprise more than a quarter of the project’s global total of 1.1 million daffodils. This milestone would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of Georgia Works, who planted the bulbs with care, and Gibbs Landscape Company, who provided the bulbs, according to a press release.

“Planting the one-millionth daffodil is both a celebration and a solemn reminder. As an Atlanta resident, I’m especially proud of the city’s role in championing this initiative,” Andrea Videlefsky, President and Founder of The Daffodil Project, said in the press release. “Downtown Atlanta’s dedication has made a meaningful impact by elevating the messages of remembrance, resilience, and hope. The presence of these daffodils reminds us of our shared responsibility to stand against hatred and injustice.”
