Nothing to see here
March 26 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Dunwoody.
🧘🏼 At Peachtree Yoga Center, as I was lying in shavasana reviewing my enemies’ list, I realized that most stories, whether written or told, have a ying/yang, good/bad element that makes them interesting. I’ve been at this for awhile, so I can usually squeeze something out of the most mundane meeting or event.
I have met my match this week in two instances, which this newsletter details. Thanks to a spelling bee champion, a change in local leadership, a parade announcement, and a proposed development, all is not lost on the news front.
🧘🏼 Does this pollen season seems to be worse than previous years? Or am I becoming one of those “back-in-my-day” people?
Don’t answer that,
Cathy

No takers on the sting op
🍻 What if there was an undercover sting wherein nobody got stung?
That’s what happened when the Dunwoody Police Department, working with agents from the Georgia Department of Revenue, conducted an undercover underage alcohol sales operation on March 18, testing 20 locations within the city.
Not a single vendor took the bait when a minor, placed there by the department, tried to illegally purchase alcohol.
“We commend businesses and employees who followed the law and refused to sell alcohol to minors during our recent compliance checks,” said Dunwoody Police Chief Mike Carlson. “Their commitment to responsible sales helps keep our community safe and prevents underage drinking. We appreciate their cooperation and dedication to public safety.”
🦸🏻♂️ Here is the list of those law-abiding establishments.

The ‘nothing burger’ is just a bun
⏰ Look, I’m not complaining about the brevity of the most recent Dunwoody City Council meeting on March 24, because they more often than last two or three hours. In this case, the 30-minute meeting was, as the kids say, was kind of a “nothing burger.”
They honored the Dunwoody High School Youth City Council (pictured above), listened to some public comments, and reviewed some minor changes on their green building policy. And out.
🧑🏼🎓Given that I cannot muster a story, here’s some information about the DHS Youth Council on the city’s website page

No word too difficult
🐐 Every sports commentator has an opinion about how hard it is to win back-to-back championships on the high school, college or professional levels. Darn near impossible, given the multiple variables that go into any competition, even if you count luck as one of them.
Let’s replace the word “sport” for “spelling bee contest” and think about the chances that one student could win the state championship two years in a row. Enter 11-year-old Sarv Dharavane, who did exactly that last Friday, March 21.
On the low end of estimating, the Austin Elementary School fifth grader probably spelled hundreds, if not thousands, of words correctly on his way to his second trip to the national championship, with layers of competition that included school, district, county, and regional contests. His winning word was “compas” (a modern méringue dance genre of Haiti). BTW, the “s,” when correctly pronounced, is silent. So, in conclusion, luck had nothing to do with it.

It’s not goodbye, it’s see you later
👋🏽 The Dunwoody Homeowners Association said “H&G” to several people this week, including its president, Bob Fiscella, and Dunwoody High School’s head football coach Mike Nash. But don’t worry, they aren’t going that far, at least for now.
Fiscella who served in the role for four years, will remain on the executive board, after handing the reins over to Tim Brown. Nash (pictured above), who is off to coach football at Chattahoochee County High School, was named the DHA’s grand marshal for Dunwoody’s annual July 4 parade.
🏈 Here is the story about Brown and the story about Nash.

Let’s say no to office space, yes to housing
🏢 Community members on March 19 listened to a presentation about converting a 600,000 square-foot Perimeter Center office complex into multifamily residential housing.
The proposed development would involve the conversion of an existing 14-story office building at 64 Perimeter Center East into condominiums, along with the construction of townhomes and age-restricted apartments at 66 Perimeter Center East.
Peter Hansen of Workspace Property Trust and Charles Travis of Housing Studio discussed the project with about 15 attendees on the site, many of whom voiced their support of the plan. Several members of the Dunwoody Development Authority and Dunwoody city staff attended the presentation.

⚓️ Newly formed Anchor Place Respite Care, a twice-a-week program that hosts in its community space older adults living with mild-to-moderate memory issues, is looking to expand its offerings, with the help of the Dunwoody community.
Rotary of Dunwoody has named Anchor Place, as one of its beneficiaries through the Rotary Club, in their upcoming Fore the Memories Golf Tournament to be held Monday, May 19.
Participants (like Anne Hall, pictured above) at Anchor Place, which is housed in St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church on North Peachtree Road, enjoy a range of stimulating activities, including music, art, cognitive stimulation, games, service projects, gentle movement, a shared meal, prayer, and conversation.
