Sandy Springs will celebrate on May 2 the opening of the first section of the city’s Springway Trail Master Plan, a segment that connects Morgan Falls Overlook Park to Roswell Road at Cimarron Parkway.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 2, according to a news release. Parking is available in the parking lot next to the Morgan Falls Dog Park at 100 Morgan Falls Road.

The release said the 1.88-mile segment includes an 8 to 12-foot-wide multi-use, paved trail with retaining walls, a top-down boardwalk across Orkin Lake, drainage structures, pedestrian bridges, roadway realignments, landscaping, and trail signage.

Constructed by the City of Sandy Springs in partnership with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program, the PATH Foundation, and the Sandy Springs Conservancy, the Springway Trail cost $8.5 million and included a $3 million Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program Grant.

The city was required to provide an approximately $4.8 million match to cover the remaining construction costs, according to the city’s website.

Work on the trail section was delayed in December 2023 when contractors encountered unforeseen rock during the construction of the boardwalk over Orkin Lake. The city council had to approve two change orders of more than $525,000 each to continue boardwalk pier drilling operations
