Google’s philanthropic arm is investing $1 million into the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta to train local nonprofits in the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

The funding is part of Google.org’s $75 million AI Opportunity Fund, which aims to provide one million Americans with essential AI skills.

The Atlanta project will be implemented in partnership with Project Evident, a nonprofit that specializes in helping community-based organizations develop their technological abilities.

Through the initiative, Atlanta-area nonprofits will receive a wide range of AI education support — including workshops, webinars, one-on-one coaching, tailored AI adoption plans and peer learning opportunities.

“By equipping our nonprofits with essential AI skills, we’re not simply investing in technology, we’re investing in the future of our community,” said Georgia Congresswoman Nikema Williams. “This initiative between Google and the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta demonstrates the power of collaboration to better serve our residents.”

A 2024 Google study found that over 40% of surveyed nonprofits reported their staff not being trained or fluent in AI, highlighting a skill gap in that sector that Google felt needed to be addressed.

“Nonprofits are addressing some of society’s most pressing challenges, and Google.org is committed to empowering them with AI skills to help them accelerate their impact,” said Maggie Johnson, vice president of Google.org. “We’re proud to support Project Evident and Tech:NYC as they provide nonprofits with technical assistance and AI training at no cost.”

The brand new program kicked off with a “Discovery Day” event in Atlanta, where local nonprofits gathered for a day of AI training and programming.
