A newsy week
May 21 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Dunwoody. It’s the run-up to a holiday weekend, so you might think, “slow news.” Au contraire, Pierre.
🕵🏻 This newsletter details a meeting that recapped the evolution of Perimeter Center area over the past 30 years, two blurbs about local schools that were honored for excellence, and my failed attempt to go “undercover” for a story that was definitely “overcover.” I also highlight a couple of Memorial Day events in the city that are worth checking out.
Enjoy Wine-Down Wednesday,
Cathy

‘Envision Perimeter’ touts successes
⛰️ Speakers at the Perimeter Chamber’s first-ever “Envision Perimeter” on May 20 touted the elements that make the area desirable for young professionals and corporate headquarters.
The summit, themed “Every Piece in Place,” was a collaboration by the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts with the Greater Perimeter Chamber and Leadership Perimeter.
The meeting, held at the iconic King Building in Sandy Springs, featured a mixture of speakers and panelists who discussed the evolution of the Perimeter area from an office-heavy development to one that features retail, restaurants, and pedestrian connectivity.
“The thought that we could put a [pedestrian] trail through the middle of I-285 – we said, ‘heck, no’ – and the word we used wasn’t ‘heck,’” said Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry. “But here it is.”
↗️ Here is a recap of the event.

Local schools shine in state evaluation
🎒Dunwoody’s Austin Elementary School (pictured above), Kittredge Magnet School and DeKalb County Wadsworth Magnet School for High Achievers have been named as 2024 Single Statewide Accountability System Platinum Award in the Highest Performing category by the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement (GOSA).
Three other schools – Vanderlyn, Dunwoody Elementary, and DeKalb Early College Academy – achieved gold status.
The recognition places the three platinum status schools among the top 1 percent of schools in the state for academic achievement.

Investigative reporting?
🎥 This week, I heard that a film crew was congregating at the Funwoody complex off Chamblee Dunwoody Road, so I launched an undercover recon mission so our arts and entertainment reporter Sammie Purcell could write a hard-hitting piece about it.
Well, it took some digging – meaning I drove by and saw a truck that clearly said “Murdaugh Props,” circled around the parking lot, took a few photos from the comfort of my car, and headed home.
💪 Sammie did all the heavy lifting – Here’s her story.

Speaking of honors . . .
🇨🇲 Dunwoody High School has once again earned recognition as a U.S. Department of State Medallion Member School for its commitment to cultural enrichment by hosting exchange student Lionel Tekang from Cameroon.
According to the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs, students from countries all over the world “receive a highly competitive, merit-based scholarship from the U.S. Department of State to attend local high schools and live with families in urban, rural, and suburban communities in all 50 states.”

It’s not just a day off
🪖 The City of Dunwoody invites the community to reflect, honor and give thanks during its annual Memorial Day Ceremony, which will take place at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 26, at the Brook Run Park Veterans Memorial, 4770 N. Peachtree Road.
This year’s keynote speaker is Major Rick Scheff, a decorated U.S. Air Force officer and F-16 fighter pilot with more than 1,000 flight hours and more than 300 combat hours in missions across Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria.
If you can’t make the service, but want to participate in a meaningful way, several members of the Dunwoody/Sandy Springs VFWs are putting flags on veterans’ graves at a North Atlanta Memorial Park at 5196 Winters Chapel Road on Thursday, May 22 starting at 9 a.m.
And one more opportunity – Dunwoody Baptist Church will hold its annual Memorial Day remembrance concert on Thursday, May 22 at 7 p.m.
🫡 The city has more information about Monday’s ceremony.
