Brookhaven City Council members voted to invest in transportation projects at the Tuesday, May 27 meeting, moving forward with a vehicular bridge across I-85 and the completion of the Briarwood multi-use path.

Council members approved a contract for Atlas Consulting to design a vehicular bridge across I-85 from Buford Highway to Chantilly Drive.

According to a memo, the cost will be negotiated with the vendor as each task order is issued, but the estimated cost for the complete project design is approximately $2.5 million. The city council agreed to pay $596,212.48, with a 15 percent contingency for the concept design.

District 1 Council Member Michael Diaz called it a “great opportunity to stitch the city back together.”

Council Member John Funny recused himself from the vote because his firm, Grice Consulting, does business with Atlas Consulting outside of Brookhaven.

“I want to make a public statement in support of mayor pro tem and council member Funny,” said Mayor John Park. “There’s not even really a conflict, per se. It was just a potential perception of conflict. And in Brookhaven, we take these things very seriously. We have a lot of professionals. We have a lot of people that are involved in various things, and we were very careful to put in firewalls and protections in place to make sure there are no conflicts.”

In other action, council members voted unanimously to acquire .22 acres for $35,000 that will complete the Briarwood multi-use path, which the city has been working to develop for more than a year.

In other news:

  • The Urban Redevelopment Agency met briefly on May 27 to approve spending $393,086 on audio visual, electrical, fire protection and HVAC systems for the fourth floor expansion at the new Brookhaven City Centre.

We regret an error in the original article. The city approved a vehicular bridge, not a pedestrian bridge as previously stated.
