Wednesday wildness

June 4 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Dunwoody. A routine trip to the bank yesterday turned into some real drama, as I witnessed firsthand that crazy police chase through the streets of Dunwoody. More on that below.

🗳 This week’s newsletter discusses Dunwoody’s new farmer’s market, a candidate throwing his hat into the ring for city council, an update on permanent changes on Nandina Lane, and some upcoming events, including an “orange”-you-glad-you-know-that fact about the King and Queen building.

Steady on,
Cathy

You can run, but you can’t hide

💸 On June 3, I was minding my own business at United Bank on Mt. Vernon Road when a black SUV went bombing down the street doing about 70 mph, followed by at least 19 police cars (yes, I tallied the count on a bank deposit slip).

My friends in law enforcement tell me a chase like that doesn’t happen unless the suspect has done something pretty serious (think life-threatening situations).

It turns out that this particular “situation” involved three juveniles accused of aggravated assault and auto theft, which culminated in a wild chase that ran for 30 minutes along residential streets in Brookhaven, Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, and Doraville with speeds of up to 100 mph.

🏎️ Everything is still playing out, but here’s what we know so far.

Sunday funday has a new outlet

🍑 There’s a new farmers market in town, and from the looks of its first week, it’s going to become a Dunwoody favorite.

On June 1, the inaugural Shops of Dunwoody Farmers Market opened for business with 33 vendors and 800 visitors, according to Polina Williams of SPS Productions, who also began the Chamblee Farmers Market in April.

The market, which will run through Nov. 16 on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., includes many vendors who do not frequent the Dunwoody Homeowners Association Market on Saturdays at Brook Run Park, Williams said.

🫐 Learn more about the market and Williams’ desire to blend community with commerce.

Nandina Lane plan underway

🚧 According to Dunwoody officials, the second phase of the Nandina Lane reconfiguration will begin in earnest starting Monday, June 9.

Last Friday’s weekly City of Dunwoody newsletter (you should subscribe – here’s how) said the changes will involve raised pavement markers, a few vertical tubular markers, and new striping to realign the southbound direction on Nandina as it approaches Mt. Vernon Road.

These changes will create an angle closer to 90 degrees, providing better visibility and making the intersection safer for pedestrians. The no-right turn restriction on Mt. Vernon at Nandina will remain.

Changes at the intersection, the site of multiple vehicle and pedestrian accidents, has been discussed for years. While it’s not popular with everyone, it’s happening.

🚏Here’s a previous story that discusses the city’s plan.

Ziskind declares for Post 2

☑️ David Ziskind announced on June 3 his intention to run for Dunwoody City Council Post 2.

“I appreciate the many conversations I’ve had across the community over the past few years, and after consulting with my family I’ve come to the conclusion that now is the time to make a difference in our city,” Ziskind said in his announcement.  “I am humbled by the outpouring of support and encouragement I’ve received from our community. “

Ziskind, according to his campaign website, has served on the Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals since 2019 and graduated from Dunwoody Police Department’s Citizens’ Police Academy in 2012. No official word yet about the intentions of the incumbents in Post 1, 2, and 3, which will also be on the November ballot – but stay tuned.

And finally, fun facts

🟧 Atlanta’s 34-story King and Queen towers at the Concourse in Sandy Springs will be illuminated orange on Friday, June 20 in honor of the 10th annual World FSHD Day. The lighting was organized by the Atlanta Chapter of The FSHD Society, the world’s largest research-focused patient organization for facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy.

The Society’s Atlanta Chapter was organized by Dunwoody entrepreneur Jack Gerblick in 2018. Gerblick was diagnosed with FSHD 33 years ago and started the Atlanta Chapter because he wanted to be a part of the journey to find a cure for this rare disease.

🤓 Here’s more information about FSHD Society.

P.S. I bet our Scripps Bee contestant from Dunwoody, Sarv Dharavane, could have spelled “facioscapulohumeral” correctly.

🍣 Restaurant news: There is a new unlimited temaki offering from High Street’s Cuddlefish, the recently opened Asian concept in Dunwoody’s High Street Development from Chef Jason Liang.

Cuddlefish has launched “Temaki Takeover” every Monday and Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., where guests can enjoy unlimited sushi hand rolls (temaki) and select small bites — including Taiwanese chicken nuggets — for $79 per person.

🥩 And speaking of dining news, Steak and Grace is now offering brunch every Saturday and Sunday 11:30 a.m.- 3 p.m., featuring dishes like  shrimp and grits with jumbo Atlantic shrimp and tasso ham gravy, brisket and potato hash skillet with a crispy six-minute egg, and grilled Georgia peach salad with arugula, goat cheese, and balsamic.

🐕 Our July issue cover story, entitled “Pets and Their People,” is one of my favorites, and we need you to participate.  It’s pretty self-explanatory, but since I’ve got submissions from people who are missing the assignment, the picture needs to be of a person AND a pet. Size matters in this case: the picture needs to be 1MB at least.  Send to me with your name and the name of your pet.

🚫 P.S. Even though I’m sure it’s hilarious, we are not going to accept AI-generated photos.
