‘So hot in herre’

JUNE 25 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Dunwoody. Now that we are in the so-called heat dome, I’m back to wanting a little rain in my life.

🙅 This week’s news includes a recap of the Dunwoody Homeowners Association voting not to support a low-income senior housing apartment project, a preview of Dunwoody’s upcoming 4th of July parade, info about a Dunwoody native’s big-time animation project, and all about grants from Spruill Center that will promote art and community.

🏊 Stay cool, even if it’s just in name only,
Cathy

DHA won’t support low-income senior apartments

👎🏽 The Dunwoody Homeowners Association on June 22 declined to support a zoning change that would allow the construction of more than 200 age- and income-restricted apartments on Ashford Dunwoody Road – a plan with lots of opposition that two weeks ago was thought to be dead in the water.

The panel, in executive session after the meeting, entertained a motion to support the development with conditions, but it failed, according to DHA President Tim Brown.

Dominium representatives gave a similar presentation on June 10 to the Dunwoody Planning Commission and the panel deferred a decision, despite a request from Dominium for either an approval or denial of the application to rezone the site from O-I (Office Industrial) to PD (Planned Development).

🏗️ The request returns to the planning commission on July 8. Read more about the DHA meeting here.

Georgia’s largest July 4 parade is close

🇺🇸 Hard to believe that Dunwoody’s annual Fourth of July parade is right around the corner. The parade route is approximately 2.7 miles and steps off from the intersection of Mount Vernon Road and Jett Ferry Road at 9 a.m., proceeds west on Mt. Vernon to Dunwoody Village, turns right onto Dunwoody Village Parkway, circles around the parkway, and ends at Dunwoody Village at Starbucks.

For the newbies, the parade spectators are encouraged to set up chairs along Mt. Vernon and circle around the Dunwoody Village Parkway into Dunwoody Village. Social media’s running joke is that you set up for the next year’s parade about five minutes after this one ends.

Note: Mt. Vernon Road, between Jett Ferry Road and Dunwoody
Village, will be closed from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

So far, the parade has about 116 entries, so be ready to lock in with comfy chairs, snacks, and beverages. The temperatures that day may come down a few notches, if my weather app is correct.

🎇Here’s a link to our print edition that contains more information about the parade.

Dunwoody native talks ‘Elio’

🎬 Stephen Wong has been a part of the Pixar team since the days of “Ratatouille.” Now, the Dunwoody native’s animation work can be seen in the new film “Elio.”

The movie is about an 11-year-old boy named Elio who makes contact with aliens in space and goes on an intergalactic adventure, befriending a worm-like alien creature named Glordon. Wong, who attended Georgia Tech for computer science before heading off to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, worked specifically on the character of Elio.

I’ve been trying to glean a little information about Wong’s days in Dunwoody, but so far, no dice. Rough Draft Atlanta recently spoke with Wong about his career with Pixar and the movies that got him into animation.

Spruill Center awards grants to five art projects

👩‍🎨 The Larch Creative Fund, in conjunction with the Spruill Center for the Arts, recently awarded a total of $44,192 in grants to fund arts-based projects within Georgia.

According to a release from Spruill, more than 100 applications were received, and the five winners were selected by an awards committee.

“These projects were chosen by the committee for the value they will bring to the arts themselves and for the myriad of ways in which they encourage community and social connection through the arts,” Spruill CEO Alan Mothner said.
