Sandy Springs has added adaptive fishing to its recreation programs with an event scheduled on Friday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to noon on the Springway.

The city’s Recreation and Parks Department will take advantage of the Chattahoochee River and its tributaries in this event that welcomes seasoned anglers and first-timers, according to a press release. The program is in partnership with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Empower Therapy.

The program can accept up to 16 adaptive anglers and their families.

The smaller, sensory-friendly event on even terrain may make enough difference for some individuals. Others may benefit from adaptive equipment being made available that will include:

  • EcoRover all-terrain mobility chairs (6 available; waiver required),
  • Adaptive wrist, grip, and arm supports,
  • Hearing, vision, and tactile impairment aids,
  • On-the-spot training and hands-on support.

Registered adaptive fishing participants will meet in the Morgan Falls Dam lower parking lot (crushed gravel surface) and make their way to the Springway, which features a boardwalk and paved walkway. Special permission was received to fish for this adaptive event. Fishing is not typically permitted on the Springway.

Outdoor enthusiasts can also explore the Chattahoochee River with the city’s adaptive kayaking program. Led by American Canoe Association-trained instructors, adaptive kayaking offers an opportunity to enjoy the river with maximum independence. Customized kayaks with specialized equipment are available along with an accessible dock that features a ramp, transfer seat, and kayak launch for smooth river entry. Volunteers for this program are welcome.

Register online at the city’s website for adaptive recreation offerings.
