News you can use

Sept. 19 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Tucker. It’s the calm before the storm for sure, as next week, there’s a lot going on in Tucker, starting with Monday’s City Council meeting.

🗳 Today’s newsletter details Rough Draft’s city council and mayoral candidate forum, a contentious meeting about a proposed apartment complex, and a happy ending for a Tucker home flip. Also, a little something about pickleball.

☀️ Have a great weekend,
Cathy

‘Boy, that escalated quickly’

🥊 On Wednesday, Sept. 17, developers who want to build a 505-unit apartment complex at the city’s saddest retail outlet, aka Northlake Mall, held a neighborhood meeting to gather feedback about the plan. IMO, it got out of hand in a hurry.

This isn’t the first time this proposal has been discussed. Developers asked the Tucker City Council at its June 23 meeting for input about the future of Northlake Mall, floating the possibility of constructing about 500 apartments in the former JCPenney site.

It would be part of a bigger initiative that Trammell Crow and mall owner ATR Corinth Partners envision for the mostly empty property that could include a Planned Unit Development (PUD), which is a multi-year process involving the Atlanta Regional Commission and other agencies.

Wednesday’s meeting was more like a quibble-and-argue forum, which started as soon as attorney Dennis Webb (pictured above) attempted to present a brief overview of the project. Even when he said he didn’t know the answer to a question, the follow-up was “Why don’t you know?”

🤺 Here’s more about the meeting here.

Flip it Forward home – SOLD

🔨 Last year, Amy and Jon Pedersen of the Purpose Driven Real Estate Group purchased the former home of Ray and Sydney Lund, and upon finding out that the couple had fostered more than 40 children throughout their lives, they decided to renovate the house and donate the net proceeds of the sale to Atlanta Angels.

In order to maximize the amount, the Pedersens sought in-kind donations and work from local contractors. Fast forward to September, and the home sold after only 11 days on the market, and Atlanta Angels is $46,000 richer.

😇 Read more about it here, and watch a video of the former owner seeing the home for the first time.

Pickleball on Tucker council agenda

🥒 At the Sept. 22 city council meeting, the panel is expected to discuss a 66-page draft of an acoustic sound analysis and mitigation report from PSM Consulting about pickleball for three park locations: Tucker Recreation Center, Henderson Park, and Rosenfeld Park.

I read over the comprehensive report and am impressed at the depth of detail in it. The study, which I suspect is going to grind opponents’ gears, concludes that with 12-foot and 14-foot barriers and other noise-canceling measures, the decibel level at the courts at the Tucker Recreation Center would be in the acceptable range for neighboring properties.

🎧 I imagine this “might” be a hot topic at the meeting. Here’s a link to the report.
