Sandy Springs Police traffic investigators arrested two motorists who were allegedly racing on GA 400, which resulted in serious injury to a Sandy Springs police officer on Sept. 20.

Sgt. Leon Millholland, public information officer for the Sandy Springs Police Department, said motorcyclist Riad Ahmed, who was allegedly racing the driver of a 2013 VW Jetta, approached the accident scene driving at a high rate of speed, lost control of the motorcycle, and was ejected. The motorcycle then struck the police officer and the vehicle involved in the accident that the officer was investigating.

The officer remains in a local hospital in stable condition.

Ahmed, who was also injured in the incident, faces charges of DUI, reckless driving, failure to move over, failure to maintain lane, open container, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and several other charges, Millholland said.

The driver of the Jetta, David Anthony Hightower of Sandy Springs, was arrested on Sept. 23 and charged with racing, reckless driving, and serious injury by motor vehicle, according to Millholland. Hightower was taken to the Fulton County Jail. Bond was set at $20,000 for the three charges.
