Fulton County Sheriff’s Office investigators have charged a 27-year-old Fulton County Jail inmate with assaulting another inmate who remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Shania White of Atlanta was charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and tampering with evidence – felony, according to a news release from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office.
The release said that White allegedly attacked Tyriana Ledbetter, age 20, of Stockbridge, on Sept. 23. A sheriff’s office spokesperson told Rough Draft Atlanta that determining the exact time of the assault is part of the investigation.
Ledbetter’s family was notified about the arrest and met with Sheriff Pat Labat, according to the release. Labat also visited Ledbetter at the hospital.
The investigation continues.
The sheriff’s office and the Fulton County Commission remain under a consent decree on conditions at the jail. A federal judge’s order followed a report by the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia and the U.S. Department of Justice about the jail. The report found that Fulton County and the sheriff’s office failed to adequately protect incarcerated persons from substantial risk of serious harm.
