A suspect has been taken into custody and an officer is being treated for a gunshot wound after Sandy Springs Police responded to a shots-fired call on Carroll Manor Drive at 11:15 a.m. on Oct. 14.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) identified the suspect as 56-year-old Herbert Mesa.

The officers who arrived on the scene near Sandy Springs Middle School were told a subject was inside a home, Officer Jerrell Greene, the SSPD’s public information officer on the scene, told Rough Draft Atlanta.

The officers who entered the home with a ballistic shield to make contact with that subject were met by gunfire, which they returned.

One Sandy Springs police officer was injured when a bullet grazed his thumb.
The officer, after being treated at an area hospital, is recovering at home.

“The suspect did barricade himself for a couple of hours,” Greene said.

Police blocked Pride Place at Roberts Drive from motorist traffic during the incident.

The suspect surrendered to police at approximately 2 p.m. and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. The GBI reported that Mesa was in stable condition.

The GBI reported that once the investigation is completed, the case will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.

No students were present at the middle school as the Fulton County School system is on its fall break from classes this week.

The SSPD asked the GBI for assistance and to take over the investigation.

Greene said officers from the Sandy Springs, Alpharetta, and Roswell Police Departments responded, along with the Sandy Springs SWAT and North Metro SWAT units.

No cause for the incident had been determined.
