Editor’s Note: This story has been updated to reflect the correct day of the week for the celebration. It’s Saturday, Nov. 1, not Sunday as previous versions reported.
Tucker will celebrate hitting double digits this weekend.
The kickoff to Tucker’s 10-year celebration will take place at 2:30 p.m. Sat., Nov. 1, at the Church Street Greenspace. The three-part celebration recognizes the passing of the referendum that granted Tucker its cityhood.
Mayor Frank Auman said he hopes citizens will take part in one or all of the three festivities that will mark the 10-year kickoff. The day begins with a brief celebration on the Church Street Greenspace, followed by a tailgate watch party for the University of Georgia vs. the University of Florida football game, and finally, a concert by Atlanta-born singer/songwriter Michelle Malone.
“We’re going to take some time to have a celebration, have cake, make a toast, and hear some speeches from some important people,” Auman said during a recent city council meeting.
Before 2015, Tucker existed as an unincorporated suburb of DeKalb. As the first decade of the 21st century arrived, communities like Dunwoody and Brookhaven formed, which inspired a small group of Tucker residents to consider their own cityhood, according to an InTucker magazine letter authored by Auman .
“It began with a small core of about eight people and quickly grew into a larger group of volunteers,” Auman’s note reads. “After a lot of work over the course of two years, in April of 2015, the legislature passed a bill which contained a proposed charter and called for a cityhood referendum for Tucker.”
In November 2015, the bill passed with 74 percent of the vote, establishing that charter as the foundational definition of the City of Tucker.
