A large water main break has washed out part of a DeKalb County road, leaving Decatur City Schools students dismissed from class and three DeKalb County School District schools with early dismissals and relocation plans Monday, Dec. 1.
DCSD students at Avondale Elementary, DeKalb School of the Arts, and Wadsworth Magnet School have been relocated or dismissed from classes as a result of the water main break, which erupted at 3124 Midway Rd. in Decatur, Carla Parker, DCSD communications coordinator, told Rough Draft Atlanta.
NewsChopper 2 flew over the scene, where it spotted a large hole in the road. There is no timetable for when repairs will be completed, according to the DeKalb County Department of Watershed.
The City Schools of Decatur says it has sent all students home effective immediately.
Communications advising parents and guardians of dismissal and relocation instructions have been administered. DCSD supported displaced students at accommodating schools, and also provided lunches to students.
“We appreciate the flexibility and patience of our schools and families as repairs continue, and extend a special thank-you to our hosting schools for their collaboration and support,” Parker said Monday.
As of Monday afternoon, DWM was still in the midst of repairs on the water main. Customers experiencing low water pressure should contact DWM at dekalbwaterops@dekalbcountyga.gov or 770-270-6243.
