The 3rd Annual Spirit of DeKalb Awards Gala brought together residents, county employees, and philanthropists seeking to highlight the people and organizations that “make DeKalb shine.”
The awards gala was founded by CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson in 2022 in partnership with the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce. The Dec. 13 celebration, hosted by Emmy-nominated radio personality Ryan Cameron, brought out dozens of residents, entrepreneurs, county employees, and civic leaders, including Chamber President Frankie Atwater, to the Crowne Plaza Perimeter at Ravina.
“This is one of the most inspiring nights of the year as we honor the leaders, neighbors, and changemakers who make DeKalb shine,” read a statement from Cochran-Johnson. “Every ticket also supports our work to reduce food insecurity and strengthen families across the county.”

The award categories included Lifetime Achievement Award, Bill Gates Philanthropist of the Year, Lou Walker Community Impact Award, Arthur M. Blank Innovation Award, Business Legacy Award, Earl A. Walker Small Businessperson of the Year, Public Servant of the Year, Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Business of the Year, and Chamber Volunteer of the Year.
“The Spirit of DeKalb Awards shines a light on individuals, businesses, and public servants whose work strengthens our county,” read a statement on the awards’ gala website. “This annual gala celebrates excellence in leadership, service, and innovation, while raising support for initiatives that uplift and empower DeKalb residents.”

The Noir Orchestra and violinist Alex Ahn also performed for the award attendees. DeKalb County officials plan to announce the winners and proceeds raised later this week.
“Thank you to everyone who participated in the 3rd Annual Spirit of DeKalb Awards Gala,” Cochran-Johnson said in a statement. “From county employees and community leaders to residents, partners, and sponsors, the gala highlighted the people and organizations helping move DeKalb County forward.”
