This year marks 40 years of the federal holiday honoring the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 2025, the nation celebrated the 30th anniversary of the National Day of Service, which is often celebrated with events and volunteer projects that embody the community work the seminal civil rights leader heralded.

“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve,” King once said. “You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
