The Southern Unity Movement will host the 25th annual Rustin/Lorde Community Breakfast on Jan. 19 at 9 a.m. at the Loudermilk Conference Center in Downtown Atlanta.

The event recognizes Black LGBTQ+ activists and organizers who work to advance the values of inclusion, justice, and activism inspired by civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, architect of the 1963 March on Washington, and Audre Lorde, feminist, poet, and equal rights activist.

Founded in January 2002, the Rustin/Lorde Breakfast has become a tradition of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration.

This year’s event will feature two keynote speakers: Alexis Pauline Gumbs, author of “Survival is a Promise: The Eternal Life of Audre Lorde,” and Marcus Lee, Assistant Professor at Princeton University known for his work on Black and LGBTQ+ histories. Lisa Cunningham, Executive Vice President at the Black Women’s Health Imperative, will serve as host.

The breakfast will also include recognition of the recipients of the Rustin/Lorde Legacy Award.

This year’s recipients include: Apostle David Lay, E.R. Anderson and Sara Look of Charis Books & More, Gus Kaufman, Jessie McNaulty, Rev. Duncan Teague, Miko Evans, Ashe Helm-Hernandez. Bert Skellie, Rashad Burgess, Dewey McClain, Ronald Ramizz Ware, Monica Simpson, Lorraine Fontana, Hilary Thomas, Jamie Roberts, Tracee McDaniels, and Jeff Graham.
