Surprise Tucker twist

Jan. 16 — It’s Cathy and Stephanie from Rough Draft with our weekly newsletter on Tucker.

Cathy: You know that twisty feeling in your stomach when you see someone you associate with a particular location unexpectedly appears at another? I call it “teacher-in-the-grocery-store” syndrome. I experienced it while attending a legislative forum in Dunwoody on Wednesday, when Anne Lerner, who probably doesn’t live in the Tucker City Hall, walked in. Some irrational feelings, like that recurring dream that you missed your final exam, never fade.

It was a busy week in Tucker, but before we get into it, a few notes:

🔙 The Way Back Band continues Tucker’s Winter Concert series at Tucker Recreation Center on Friday, Jan. 23 from 6-9 pm. This is a free event, but pre-registration for each attendee is required because of limited space.

☕️ Mint Coffeehouse will hold a Hands of Hope: MLK Day Family Event Monday, Jan. 19 from 9-10 a.m. There will be story time, and “crafts that inspire hope and peace.” Send an email to Mint for more information.

👮🏽 Representatives from the DeKalb County Police Department will hold an informational meeting at the Tucker Precinct, 5234 Lavista Road, on Feb. 2 from 6-8 p.m. Officials will provide an update on what’s going on in Tucker and answer questions.

🥶 Have a great weekend,
Cathy and Stephanie

Lerner era begins, city council gets to work

📦 Tucker residents and local dignitaries packed its city hall Jan. 12 to witness the city’s installation of its second mayor and three returning city council members.

The room overflowed into the building’s foyer during the swearing-in ceremony, conducted by Municipal Court Judge Steve Nicholas, with more than 150 witnessing the ceremony and the passing of the gavel from inaugural mayor Frank Auman to Mayor Anne Lerner, the city’s first female mayor and second-ever mayor.

“Our work is always bigger than one person,” Lerner said during the ceremony. “We stand on the efforts of those who came before us, and we are responsible for leaving Tucker stronger for those who come next…We won’t always agree, but we work together.”

The final curtain for Macy’s

🚪 Cathy’s friend Leila used to call her at random times to let her know that “Macy’s is throwing things out the door” with some huge sale. Sadly, it’s no longer an exaggeration as the Northlake Macy’s is literally throwing things out the door in advance of its closing sometime this spring.

Stephanie visited the soon-to-close store this week and found a few people who were pretty busted up about the impending closure, but also had plans to shop at another Macy’s real soon.  I guess it’s not cool to be too sad for too long these days.

🏷️ Here’s a story about the closing and what could be coming to take its place.

Brio Theater readies for late January opening

🎭 Delores Burgess seeks to foster a sanctuary for creatives with the opening of Brio Theater, a new venue that will offer space for actors, dancers, and other performing artists in the heart of Tucker.

“The Brio exists to cultivate creativity, confidence, and connection,” Burgess said. “This is a space where artistry lives, voices are amplified, and the community comes together to grow.”
