The Atlanta Police Department said officers were called out to the Helios apartments for reports of shots being fired just before 7:30 a.m.

Police said when they got to the apartment complex, they saw evidence of gunfire coming from an apartment.

The officers went into the apartment, and when they opened a door in one of the back bedrooms, the person inside began shooting at them.

Investigators said one of the officers was grazed in the head by one of the bullets, and the other received shrapnel wounds to their arm.

Officers fired back at the shooter, but it appeared the gunman was not hit.

That’s when a massive police response descended on the building.

Officers were able to get out of the appartment and the gunman barricaded themselves inside for hours.

SWAT officers could be seen walking in and out of the building throughout the morning and afternoon.

Another person who lives inside the building tells Channel 2 Action News that there are 300+ apartments in the building.

An emergency alert was sent to residents around 10:45 a.m. from the complex’s management, telling them to shelter in place, barricade their doors, and to “stay quiet and out of sight.”

The officers were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital to be treated for their injuries. Both have been released.

Police announced shortly before 2:30 p.m. that the gunman had been taken into custody. They did not have the gunman’s ID as of yet.
