In the making

Feb. 18 — Sometimes all it takes is a slight shift in vantage point to see a place, or a practice, with new clarity.

That’s the current running through this week’s Sketchbook stories. Both ask what changes when we approach culture as something we can read up close: through fragments, through process, through the people shaping the room.

One piece follows Puerto Rican nonprofit Beta—Local as it reimagines the Atlanta Center for Photography’s Reading Room as an entry point into Puerto Rico that refuses a single storyline.

The other is a conversation with artist Makeda Lewis-Kinuthia, newly named co-director at Day & Night Projects, on what leadership can look like inside an artist-run space, and what she hopes to build as the gallery nears its 10th anniversary.

What are you looking at differently?

Learning with Beta—Local

🇵🇷 Puerto Rican nonprofit Beta—Local transforms ACP’s Reading Room into an open invitation to piece together Puerto Rico’s story, through texts and objects, under the theme “the strong will to remain.”

Post of the Week

🧧 2025 marked the final days of the wood snake, while 2026 brings the fire horse. Experience this ode to Lunar New Year renewal and transition from @sonyayongjames, where horsehair becomes a tactile, shedding-serpent meditation. It is a small, striking reminder that endings can be their own kind of beginning.
